In December 2023, SPC Samlip introduced new products with the help of Eumsik Dimibang, the first Korean cookbook. This achievement was attained about seven months after signing a business agreement (MOU) with Yeongyang-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do in May. Today, we will introduce the attempts of SPC Samlip, which is trying to popularize authentic recipes by combining traditional recipes containing the history of Korea’s food culture with unrivaled bakery technology. Let’s take a look together.

SPC Samlip Begins Commercializing Bakery Products Using Eumsik Dimibang

Eumsik Dimibang is the best Korean cookbook in existence and provides a glimpse into the hospitality culture of noble families in the 1600s.

Eumsik Dimibang, which SPC Samlip used to develop new products, is a Korean cookbook written about 350 years ago by Jang Gye-hyang, a female nobleman from a noble family living in Yeongyang Province, with the desire to continue her family’s tradition. It is also known as East Asia’s first cookbook written by a woman, and has special significance in the history of world food culture. It introduces recipes and storage methods for 146 types of food for entertaining guests, including noodles, fish, meat, alcoholic beverages, and vinegar, that were made at home in the Gyeongsang Province in the mid to late Joseon Dynasty in the 1600s. You can get a glimpse into the hospitality culture of noble families at the time as it covers food in detail that has been handed down from ancient times or developed by oneself. This book, which is essential for comparative studies of past and present food cultures, also plays an important role as a guide to discovering old recipes that are now almost extinct.

SPC Samlip signed a business agreement with Yeongyang-gun for the development and commercialization of products made with Eumsik Dimibang’s Sanghwa method.

In May 2023, SPC Samlip signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the development and commercialization of Eumsik Dimibang’s Sanghwa method (the method of making steamed buns as mentioned in Eumsik Dimibang) with Yeongyang-gun at the Yeongyang-gun Office in Gyeongsangbuk-do. Through this agreement, SPC Samlip promised to develop bakery products using the Sanghwa method introduced in Eumsik Dimibang and launch them in the second half of this year. Yeongyang-gun has established a strong cooperative relationship by promising to support the development and promotion of products using the Eumsik Dimibang brand and naming. On this day, SPC Samlip expressed its ambition, saying, “It is meaningful to be able to commercialize and publicize traditional Korean recipes,” further adding, “We will strive to contribute to revitalizing Yeongyang-gun by developing products using traditional culture”.

3 types of Sanghwa-byung that use Eumsik Dimibang’s Sanghwa method

On 20th of December, 2023 SPC Samlip newly introduced Sanghwa-byung, which adds the manufacturing know-how of Samlip Hopang based on the Sanghwa method introduced in Eumsik Dimibang. Sanghwa-byung, which means bread that looks like white frost, is a modern reinterpretation of Sanghwa, a fermented rice cake that appeared in the late Goryeo Dynasty. It is characterized by a chewy texture and flavor by making flour dough mixed with traditional liquor (makgeolli), going through water roux process, and then steaming it at a high temperature.

A total of three types of new products were released, including Strong Red Bean Sanghwa-byung, which is generously filled with red bean paste, Mild Red Bean Sanghwa-byung, which consists of sweet red bean filling added with condensed milk instead of honey as specified in the Sanghwa method, and has a dough made of sweet potato powder, and Honey-coated Nuts Sanghwa-byung, which brings out the texture and taste of modern ingredients such as figs, cranberries, and almonds along with acorns stuffed in the dough, local food of Yeongyang-gun. You can easily find them on online platforms including Market Kurly and Coupang, as well as at local specialty product stores in Yeongyang-gun, so be sure to experience the taste of the perfect fusion dessert presented by SPC Samlip!
