SPC Pack to Build Smart Eco-factory

SPC Pack, a packing materials manufacturing subsidiary of SPC Group, said on May 31 that it will build an eco-friendly smart factory jointly with Korea Environment Corporation affiliated with the Ministry of Environment.

‘Establishing smart ecosystem factories Project’ is a ministry project to change manufacturing factories into environment-friendly, low-carbon ones to reduce emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases and also use resources and energy more efficiently.

SPC Pack was chosen as a beneficiary of the project for 2022 in recognition of its unique green technology. It will take seven months from June to December to build its carbon-neutral, eco-friendly smart factory. The project offers an opportunity to spread ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) management further.

SPC Pack seeks to introduce greenhouse gas reduction facilities in a bid to cut back pollutant emissions and energy consumption. It plans to install a smart monitoring system to check the facilities. They are expected to produce an effect of reducing greenhouse gases by 2,100 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂-eq) each month.

“As a part of its ESG management plans, SPC Pack has made various efforts since last year to realize a circular economy for plastics and reduce carbon emissions,” SPC Pack CEO Kim Chang-dae said. “Now that we were selected as a beneficiary of the project, we will try to build facilities to produce sustainable packaging materials.”

Meanwhile, SPC Pack has proceeded with MOUs to develop eco-friendly packaging materials with SK geo centric, SKC, Lotte Chemical, and Hanwha Compound since last year. It also seeks to apply them to various food packaging materials now in use at Paris Baguette, Baskin-Robbins and SPC Samlip. In addition, for the first time in the industry of printing food packaging materials, SPC Pack obtained state-acknowledged green certifications in all of their three categories – ‘Green Enterprise,’ ‘Green Technology’ and ‘Green Technology Product.’ This was a result of its strong drive for ESG management.
