SPC Group has signed an agreement with the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and the Jeju Regional Office of Nonghyup Agribusiness Group to promote the consumption of farm produce. As part of this agreement, SPC said on December 18 that it would give support to carrot farmers on the island.
This is the second project of this kind after the group signed a deal with the Pyeongchang County Government in September this year to encourage potato consumption. Both of these projects are part of the “Happy Win-Win” project by which corporations purchase farm produce on a large scale to help farmers hit with tropical storms and heavy rains, as well as COVID-19 this year and develop and launch the products using them.
The group will buy cabbages and winter radishes, as well as carrots supplied by Jeju farmers and come up with innovative ways to use these crops in their stores to promote consumption.
The carrots to be purchased in bulk under the terms of the latest agreement are from Jeju’s Gujwa region. The area is famous for the volcanic ash soils which have abundant organic matter and produces sweet- and strong-flavored carrots. Paris Baguette will start launching new products including Jeju carrot cake, Jeju carrot mini cake, and hot Jeju carrot muffin which use carrots produced in Jeju’s Gujwa across all its stores from the end of this month.
An SPC Group official said, “We planned this second win-win project to help farmers by encouraging farm produce consumption. We will continue the same project in the future.”
Since 2012, the group has undertaken similar efforts by signing agreements with farmers to purchase the mini apples from Yeongcheon, strawberries from Sancheong, paprika from Gangjin, and again strawberries from Jinju. In addition, it struck a deal with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in January 2014 to buy farm products worth KRW 1 trillion (USD 906 million) as part of the “Happy Win-win Agreement.”
