SPC Group Launches Onion Bread to Support Struggling Onion Farms Due to Plummeting Onion Price

SPC Group (Chairman: Hur young-in) announced on the 6th that it has launched its efforts to support onion farms in Muan that are experiencing difficulties together with the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation as part of the “Happy Win-Win Growth through ESG Management Project.”

On the news of the difficult situations of Muan onion farms, which was caused by the plummeting onion price by approximately 70% as a result of a rapid drop in onion consumption due to COVID-19, and the approaching of the onion harvesting season, SPC Group came forward to help the farmhouses again this year following the previous year.

Last June, SPC Group also entered into a win-win growth agreement to provide help for Muan onion farmhouses experiencing difficulties due to the onion price drop and in securing the market, and launched four varieties of Muan onion bread with the onions bought from the Muan farms. Paris Baguette Muan Onion Bread sold more than six million units, contributing to helping Muan onion farms overcome the difficulties.

This year, SPC Group will work to boost onion consumption by launching Muan Onion Bread series comprising six types of onion bread through Paris Baguette, and the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation will donate onion bread to the neighbors in need and COVID-19 response volunteers through Nonghyup bank branches across the country.

On the 6th, SPC Group CEO Hwang Jae-bok, President Gwon Jun-hak of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, Congressman Seo Sam-seok (a member of the National Assembly’s Agriculture, Food, Rural Affairs, Oceans, and Fisheries Committee for Yeongam, Muan, and Sinan-gun of Jeollanam-do), and Chairperson Lee Jung-hui of Paris Baguette Franchisees’ Council, etc. had a meeting at Paris Baguette Gangnam Seocho store to discuss how to boost onion consumption, and agreed to support farmers.

“Following the previous year, we decided to help onion farms in Muan experiencing difficulties again this year together with the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation,” said SPC Group CEO Hwang Jae-bok. “We will steadily perform ESG management activities to promote win-win growth with farmhouses.”

Paris Baguette “Muan Onion Bread” series, which was launched in the hope of win-win growth, is characterized with the harmony of “savory and sweet” flavors. It is made of Muan onions, which are grown in the sea breeze and are known for the crispy texture and rich flavor. The series is composed of six types of onion bread: “Blooming Onion Bread” containing a generous portion of crispy onion, “Onion Cheese Bread” featuring the harmony of rich flavor of roasted onion and mild cheese, “Cheese Onion Bread,” which is soft bread with onion and bacon topping, “Sausage Soft Baguette,” which is crunch baguette with juicy sausage and crispy onion topping, “Long Sausage Bread,” which is a soft bread with a whole sausage and onion topping, and “Chewy Pizza Bread,” which is a pizza-style bread with tomato sauce and onion and cheese toppings.

Since 2012, SPC Group has been launching products based on the MOUs with local farms, such as for Yeongcheon mini apple and Gangjin sweet pepper. In January 2014, SPC entered into the “Happy Shared Growth Agreement” at a scale of KRW 1 trillion with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs to purchase domestic agricultural and livestock products in order to promote win-win growth with local farmhouses. In addition, since 2020, SPC Group has been supporting potato farms in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do, carrot farms in Gujwa-eup, Jeju-do, strawberry farms in Nonsan-si, onion farms in Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do, and ginseng farms in Punggi-eup, Yeongju-si of Gyeongsangbuk-do, etc. through the “Happy Win-Win Growth through ESG Management Project” to provide help for farmhouses experiencing difficulties amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
